RSM Bird Cameron, one of the largest mid-tier accounting firms in Australia, suggests ten things business owners can do to improve profits, cash flow and reduce stress levels throughout 2012.

January 31, 2012 – RSM Bird Cameron, one of the largest mid-tier accounting firms in Australia, suggests ten things business owners can do to improve profits, cash flow and reduce stress levels throughout 2012.

Andrew Graham, national head of business solutions, said, “There is no doubt that businesses in Australia are facing a difficult economic climate in 2012, which could lead to a potential rise in insolvenciesover the coming 12-18 months.

“Some businesses have already started the new year with cash flow difficulties as the cash cycle has tightened considerably through December and January. Now is the time for business owners to consider opportunities to restructure their business in light of what’s not working for them.

“Business owners need to remember that it is never too early to seek help and ask advice from accountants, business advisors or other specialists if they are worried about their business or managing cash flow.”

These tips can help businesses remain in the best possible shape for the year ahead:

1. Review the products and services you sell and tailor the mix to appeal to changing customer needs for 2012. Start considering and planning for other times in the year when customer needs change, for example Easter and change in seasons.

2. Review pricing structures to ensure competitiveness and profitability. Put formal procedures in place to monitor and proactively respond to competitor pricing changes.

3. Review stock levels to make sure you can satisfy customer demand for profitable product and service lines, and identify slow moving stock that can be liquidated as “bargain buys”.

4. Review sales, marketing and promotion plans and make sure they are optimised to help achieve the best results throughout 2012. Ensure all staff are aware of the targets for each week and be proactive in addressing shortfalls.

5. Review staffing plans and confirm acceptance of the rosters by all staff. For non-retail businesses, aim to schedule annual leave plans for the year as early as possible to ensure the business continues to operate effectively all year round.

6. Review fraud and theft protection systems and ensure all staff are reminded of their responsibility to be vigilant at all times.

7. Review debtor lists frequently and regularly and actively chase all overdue accounts.

8. Review the use of finance products for effectiveness. Overdrafts, premium funding, lease facilities and cash flow funding products can all be excellent tools to help match a business’s cash flow with planned outlays.

9. Complete a GST health check. Small businesses are in danger of losing time and money because of unreliable or outdated business systems causing them to incorrectly report GST.

10. Remember that you deserve to enjoy a break as well and it is vital that you are able to operate well. Plan some time off during slower periods throughout the year so that you are well rested and enthusiastic in the busier periods. Take care of your health and enjoy downtime with family and friends during the year.

The handset combines a mobile phone, pager, push-to-talk functionality, barcode scanner and access to Web-based applications in a single lightweight device.

As an easy-to-use, multi-function solution, the SpectraLink 8452 improves workplace efficiency by letting workers communicate and access data in a variety of ways from anywhere within the enterprise Wi-Fi network.

The barcode scanner in the Polycom SpectraLink 8452 handset has the capability to read both 1D and 2D barcode images in hundredths of a second from a scanning distance of up to 86.36 centimetres (34 inches) and from a wide range of horizontal and vertical scan angles.

The handset also features the legendary Polycom HD Voice™ sound quality for natural, crystal-clear conversations, a large colour display with a simple and intuitive user interface, enterprise-grade durability, simple provisioning and management and support for accessories such as battery packs and headsets.

The Polycom SpectraLink 8452 handset is in the process of qualification to display and share call and directory information via Microsoft® Lync™, which includes features such as presence and instant message information.

For long-term investment protection, the Polycom SpectraLink 8452 is the first enterprise-grade voice-over Wi-Fi handset to combine barcode scanning, web-based application integration with support for latest IEEE Wi-Fi standard (802.11n), and offers best-in-class warranty, maintenance and service offerings.

Sten Dyrmose, general manager, wireless solutions, Polycom, said, “The award-winning Polycom SpectraLink 8400 series, including the new 8452 phone, improves productivity and responsiveness of workers and meets the critical communication needs in rigorous environments such as hospitals, retail stores, factory floors and hotels.

“The multiple benefits of the handset also extend to the bottom line, delivering up to 40 per cent lower total cost of ownership than competing solutions.”

With the capability to encode about 65 times more data than 1D barcodes into a physically smaller label, 2D barcodes are quickly gaining popularity in the enterprise. This is especially true for industries where work is highly mobile and employees need instant access to data from the network in order to do their jobs. By integrating 2D barcode scanning technology in an enterprise-grade, durable handheld communications device, Polycom solves these challenges across a number of industry use cases, such as:
* healthcare, where clinical staff can increase patient safety by scanning barcodes on wristbands to obtain medical records and verify patient medication
* retail, where staff can offer better customer service by scanning barcodes for product inventory checks while interfacing with customers on the sales floor
* industrial manufacturing, where manufacturers scan barcodes to track parts and products through the supply chain.

The SpectraLink 8452 is available now. For more information, visit the product series page at www.polycom.com/sl8400.

Increasing worker mobility, proliferation of new devices in the workplace, the spread of bring-your-own-device (BYOD) and more flexible work styles leave IT professionals seeking a low cost, flexible and efficient solution to deliver and manage a Windows workspace. New technologies in Quest® vWorkspace 7.5 significantly reduce the cost of desktop virtualisation, especially for organisations using Microsoft Hyper-V, making it a leader in low cost, high density desktop virtualisation.

* vWorkspace 7.5 delivers leading solution in low cost desktop virtualisation via breakthrough, patent-pending scalability enhancements, direct Hyper-V integration, lightning fast provisioning, and advanced desktop virtualisation load balancing.
o Introduces direct support for Microsoft Hyper-V, including FREE Microsoft Hyper-V Server
o Deep integration with Microsoft Hyper-V in vWorkspace 7.5 provides complete virtual desktop lifecycle management for every aspect of the virtual desktop environment from creating, deleting, adding and updating, to changing memory configuration.
o Hyper-V Catalyst Components take Hyper-V performance and scalability to the next level by leveraging patent-pending technologies such as HyperCache and HyperDeploy to enable IOPS (I/O operations per second) reduction of up to 99 per cent, right out of the box, while enabling instantaneous provisioning of virtual desktops and RD Session Hosts (formerly Terminal Servers) across many hosts simultaneously:
* HyperCache enables caching of the most used blocks of a golden image to memory, allowing virtual desktops to only retrieve requested data from disk when not found in cache.
* HyperDeploy lets virtual desktops be provisioned instantaneously without waiting for the golden image copy to complete. It also limits network utilisation while still allowing instantaneous provisioning.
o Further reduces the cost of desktop virtualisation by allowing seamless use of local storage (DAS) and removing the need for expensive SAN storage.
o Enables provisioning of a fully functional virtual desktop in seconds due to the new vWorkspace Instant Provisioning technology.
o Quest Software recently conducted a cost and performance analysis for vWorkspace 7.5 using Login VSI, the standardised benchmark for VDI and SBC environments used by key vendors in the desktop virtualization space. Standardised cost scenarios against top competitor’s offerings allowed Quest Software to pinpoint the key areas of efficiency, and identify an overall cost savings of 33 per cent VDI CapEx cost per user.

* New vWorkspace 7.5 Desktop Clouds simplify desktop virtualisation to deliver unparalleled elasticity and maximum business agility to customers ranging from enterprise to SMB.
o Deliver the best possible performance for virtual desktops with advanced load balancing schemes, and lets the customer add capacity in only a matter of seconds.
o Requires very little administrative effort for ongoing desktop maintenance, taking only minutes to update hundreds or thousands of desktops to a new version of the corporate golden image.

Other key new features include:
* Incorporates LAN and WAN support for Microsoft Lync / Office Communicator and other VoIP applications, expanding the reach of desktop virtualisation projects.
* Offers two-factor authentication support for all vWorkspace Connectors adds an extra layer of security for users connecting from their choice of devices.
* Full RD Session Host Lifecycle Management from the vWorkspace Management Console provides all the benefits of VDI and applies them to RD Session Host, letting one server image be created and deployed in a fraction of the time of manual replication, and reducing costs associated with maintenance, support and storage.

Jon Rolls, vice president, product management, User Workspace Management, Quest Software, said, “Quest vWorkspace 7.5 introduces a game-changing set of features and advances to let companies of all sizes adopt desktop virtualisation by taking advantage of one of the lowest cost solutions available. In fact, Quest Software’s research tells it that vWorkspace 7.5 could save organisations as much as 33 per cent of their VDI CapEx cost per user compared to competing products. Combine that strong value proposition with automated Desktop Cloud management, WAN support for Lync/Communicator and automation around Session Host/Terminal Server deployment and you have a compelling, industry-leading offering.”

(NASDAQ: QSFT), now including the people and products of ScriptLogic® Corporation, has announced the availability of Secure Copy® 6.0.

Secure Copy is a powerful, comprehensive data migration and management solution that automates the copying of data between file servers without the use of agents or scripts, and enables the copying of files and folders, NTFS permissions, file shares, local users and groups and compression settings.

IT administrators rely on Secure Copy to complete data and permissions migrations during server upgrades and simplify server consolidations or facilitate organisational moves to NAS or SAN devices.

Secure Copy is the core of an array of Quest Software products that, used together, streamline the entire data migration and management process, covering pre-migration analysis, reporting and cleanup tasks, post-migration verification and reporting and ongoing data management and maintenance.

Secure Copy 6.0 includes new enhancements so the product can accommodate strategic initiatives within even the most demanding IT environments. New features include:

* Logging and reporting – Secure Copy expands the functionality with new pre-defined reports, which are available in various view output formats, and provide detailed information about migration tasks with a click of the mouse. A new dashboard, more detailed summary, and Logs views assist IT administrators by providing a better, more easily accessible snapshot of migration projects.

* Job management – Secure Copy brings a number of enhancements to job management, which provides a new and improved user experience, along with a re-designed user interface and job option categories. These new features provide an easier way for the IT administrator to confidently manage specific job options for a given migration.

* Copy performance – Secure Copy now works with Volume Shadow Copy Services so data migrations can begin from a fixed point in time with a snapshot state, letting servers or files be migrated without taking applications offline, and with less impact to end users. New bandwidth throttling functionality now added to the existing, powerful multithreaded engine reduces the potential for possible network performance delays and increases the speed of job to completion. Native 64-bit support further improves migration performance.

Michael Tweddle, senior director, Product Management, Quest Software, said, “Conversations with customers tells Quest Software to expect a significant increase in data migration projects as companies across various industry sectors look to update legacy systems and gain a competitive advantage by leveraging the latest technology. With Secure Copy 6.0, Quest Software aims to help those customers streamline the often time-consuming and challenging migration process. Automation between Windows file servers and devices and new reports dwarf functionality in other solutions, letting admin ensure that migrations were successful and security was maintained.”

The triple j Hottest 100, based on the listener’s votes from national Australian radio station triple j, will be counting down the top 100 songs of 2011 on Australia Day, Thursday 26th January 2012. The countdown will be broadcast by the radio station and streamed online.

The Hottest 100 is one of the largest public music polls in the world with millions of individual votes counted since it began in 1989.

18 January, 2012 – Increasingly sophisticated financial malware such as the Carberp Trojan is becoming more and more difficult to detect and eliminate, warns researchers at Context Information Security. Designed to steal log-in and account information and harvest credentials for email and social-networking sites, Carberp, like its more well know predecessors Zeus and Spyeye, infects machines through malicious files such as PDFs and Excel documents or drive-by downloads.

In most cases Carberp will persist undetected by antivirus software on the infected machine using advanced stealth, anti-debugging and rootkit techniques and is controlled from a central administrator control panel that lets the attacker mine the stolen data. Carberp is also part of a botnet that can take full control over infected hosts, while its complicated infection mechanisms and extensive functionality make it a prime candidate for more targeted attacks.

The malware uses multiple layers of obfuscation and encryption to remain hidden and prevent analysis. Once embedded and decrypted, the real infection begins with malicious file dropping and process injection steps that provide a backdoor to the host under attack.

Michael Jordon, research and development manager at Context, said, “The advanced infection capabilities of Trojans such as Carberp require detailed knowledge of how they operate to detect and analysis attacks.

“While many banks are now using tools such as Rapport from Trusteer to mitigate the risk of financial malware by protecting web communication with customers and preventing the stealing of account credentials, we need to stay one step ahead or at least keep pace with the malware developers to reduce their impact.”

While there is a large body of knowledge around Zeus and Spyeye, the information security industry is still building up detailed picture of newer Trojans such as Carberp. Context researchers are at the forefront of this work and have published a series of blogs to detail the workings of new generation financial malware and provide advice how it is possible to detect infection and mitigate the threats.

The latest blog focused on, ‘From Infection to Persistence’ can be seen at: http://www.contextis.com/research/blog/malware2/

January 16, 2012 - Informatica Corporation (NASDAQ: INFA), the world’s number one independent provider of data integration software, has announced that Westpac Life New Zealand Limited (Westpac), part of the Westpac Group, New Zealand’s largest full service financial institution, has standardised on the Informatica Platform to help power its strategic initiatives around customer centricity and big data.

This includes Westpac’s ambitious Insurance Project, a new enterprise business intelligence environment that is helping the company increase revenues, improve customer retention and cross-sell rates, and reduce risk. Providing a single point of authoritative and trustworthy business and insurance customer data, the Insurance Project is on track to deliver a more than 240 percent return on investment and increase revenues at least one percent over the life of a policy.

Also supported is the company’s recently launched Social Media Project, where the Informatica Platform is helping Westpac to capitalise on the opportunities presented by big interaction data to gain deeper customer insights and compete more effectively as a customer-centric organisation.

Westpac, a longtime Informatica customer, has more than 1.2 million customers – 900,000 of whom use online financial services, performing three million online transactions per month. The data being amassed in different parts of the company presents a big data challenge due to its volume, variety and complexity across multiple sources. Westpac’s previous silo-based approach to information management meant that strategic and tactical business decisions were frequently based on inaccurate, delayed and often incomplete data – a situation that led to the launch of the Insurance Project.

Phase one: Insurance Project objectives realised in just ten months
Today, with the Informatica Platform underpinning the Insurance Project, Westpac has complete, timely data driving advanced reporting, analytics and visualisations across the business. At the same time, the company’s data is approximately eight times more accurate than before. Armed with timely, relevant and trusted data, Westpac is able to make more intelligent marketing offers to customers and increase customer retention.

Moreover, through its use of the Informatica Platform, Westpac realised its Insurance Project objectives within just ten months, including:
* Enabling timely identification of effective sales behaviors and trends.
* Powering improved cross-selling across Westpac Life’s product portfolio.
* Underpinning customer retention efforts anticipated to deliver further revenue.
* Eliminating time-consuming manual reconciliation of life insurance calculations across policies, products and customers.
* Enabling more timely identification of policies outside the company’s risk tolerance.
* Improving insight into governance activities across the organisation.
* Achieving a single view of customers – their needs, buying behaviors and histories.

Phase two: capitalising on big data
In its drive towards customer-centricity, Westpac is also turning to the Informatica Platform to help leverage big interaction data through its new Social Media Project. By engaging in sentiment analysis on data derived from social media, the company anticipates achieving an even deeper understanding of customers and prospects, and an enhanced ability to move quickly on business opportunities and challenges. The Informatica Platform ensures that data captured from social media can be integrated easily with other Westpac data for comprehensive analysis.

Supporting quotes:
* “In an environment of financial uncertainty, financial efficiency and business insights for faster decision-making is a challenge Westpac has tackled,” said Kevin Crowley, head of Insurance, Westpac Life New Zealand Limited. “We are better positioned because of Informatica to respond to demands for greater transparency and turn the company’s customer insurance data assets into business insights.”
* “As part of an evolution in the exploiting of big data across Westpac, we are interested in leveraging big interaction data to provide a lens into the future of the business and the relationships created between the brand and customers,” said Torrance Mayberry, senior systems manager, Westpac Life New Zealand Limited. “The Informatica Platform enables a data-centric approach to addressing business issues across the enterprise, regardless of the sheer volume, disparity and multiplicity of sources, and increasing complexity of the data involved. By being more data-centric, we are able to become more customer-centric.”
* “Insurers and other financial services organisations must constantly be on the search for new and innovative ways to sustain competitive advantage, whether through more precisely targeted products and services or more efficient business processes,” said Graham Sowden, senior vice president, Asia Pacific, Informatica. “Westpac’s use of Informatica illustrates how empowering business stakeholders with timely visibility into their data helps to increase business agility and customer loyalty, drive top line and bottom line growth, reduce risk, and achieve a significantly higher Return on Data.”

(NASDAQ: QSFT) has announced the availability of NetVault® FastRecover 4.5, which enhances the company’s continuous data protection (CDP) capabilities by enabling instant recovery of critical Oracle data through patented Virtual On-Demand Recovery™ technology.

The newest release lets users take real-time snapshots of an Oracle database and safely store them in a NetVault FastRecover Server. In the event of a corruption or data loss, end users can access the Oracle application data within seconds after a restore is initiated.

Using the product’s built-in replication feature, Oracle data can also be sent over a wide area network from one NetVault FastRecover server to another, delivering effective protection for remote and branch offices (ROBOs), and letting companies implement a cost-effective disaster recovery strategy.

In addition to Oracle, NetVault FastRecover also provides backup and Virtual On-Demand Recovery for Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server, and Windows file-system data.

NetVault Fast Recover 4.5 lets customers integrate CDP technology with their existing backup software. Using CIFS export functionality, users can back up datasets stored on a FastRecover server using almost any data backup software, including Quest Software’s own NetVault Backup, as well as a host of third-party solutions such as Symantec NetBackup and Backup Exec, CommVault Simpana, and IBM Tivoli Storage Manager.

Continuing Quest Software’s vision to deliver an integrated data protection portfolio, NetVault FastRecover now also integrates with Recovery Manager for Exchange, letting customers search for and extract individual mail items from a NetVault FastRecover dataset.

Additional enhancements in NetVault FastRecover 4.5 include extended platform support for Windows 7.

Walter Angerer, senior vice president and general manager, data protection, Quest Software, said, “With more company data than ever before being classified as mission critical by SMBs and enterprises alike, prolonged periods of downtime have become unacceptable, meaning solutions that enable rapid recovery will play a major role in modern data protection strategies. With the release of NetVault FastRecover 4.5, Quest Software has made it easy for customers to integrate CDP into their existing data protection portfolios and take advantage of its patented Virtual On-Demand Recovery techniques.”

10 January, 2011 – While many businesses wait for the 2011 Census data to build forward-looking plans, many don’t realise they can access Australia’s current demographical landscape before the Census data is revealed in mid-2012.

Pitney Bowes Software AnySite® v9.0 provides marketers and analysts valuable insight into both business and market data, allowing them to easily analyse the relationship between the performance of their business relative to market area demographic characteristics.

The software includes estimates and predictions for population and income metrics, as well as consumer expenditure estimates, for 2011 and the next five to ten years. This not only gives a business a valuable head start in planning for the coming years, but also allows it to begin preparations for utilising the new data.

Simon Dell’Oro, Product Manager, Data Products and Analytics APAC for Pitney Bowes Software said, “There are many ways in which our software is able to make predictions about where our country and its market trends are heading, without having to wait for each five-year census. This is beneficial for a number of commercial and government industries.”

“With today’s businesses requiring intelligence that is more regularly available than Australian census data collated twice a decade, which is already almost a year old by the time it is fully processed and available, it is prudent to supplement your analysis with other predictive data for a rounded view.”

AnySite® 9.0 supports open data architecture and can be deployed from the desktop to the enterprise, allowing users to access critical demographics for understanding their customers, generate insightful maps and reports, conduct customer profiling and forecast target markets and sales.

Some of the benefits of the software include the capacity to:

• Gain valuable insights into the competitive landscape
• Predict banking needs for a bigger share of wallet
• Focus marketing efforts based on consumer behaviour and lifestyles
• Highlight areas of opportunity for geographic or program expansion
• Manage sales territories and prime market areas

Dell’Oro added that one of the main strengths of AnySite® is its ability to bring together all available data sources into the one interface for analysis, including both the company’s own business data, as well as demographics from the outside world.

Data available immediately out-of-the-box includes:

• Forecasted population and income projections for 2011, 2016 and 2021
• Over 12,500 demographic variables from the 2006 ABS Census of Population and Housing
• Household expenditure estimates for every Census Collection District in Australia. (14 categories of expenditure are classified, broken down into over 100 sub-categories)
• Lifestyle segmentation classifications, using CAMEO Australia

“Rather than having to spend time creating complicated spreadsheets for extracts to upload to a server, AnySite® 9.0 allows you to link directly to where the data is stored within your organisation, thereby enabling a dynamic view of your business information and greatly reducing the maintenance overhead required,” Dell’Oro said.

January 5, 2011 – Quest Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: QSFT) has announced a new release of Quest® Site Administrator for SharePoint, a Microsoft SharePoint management solution, to include central reporting capabilities for SharePoint Online in Microsoft Office 365.

The product helps users understand, manage and secure multiple SharePoint installations from a single product whether on-premises, in the cloud, or a hybrid of both.

Site Administrator for SharePoint gives users an overview of their existing environment by providing metrics, trends and other insights into Office 365 usage, data growth, and storage distribution, which lets organisations efficiently manage their SharePoint Online licenses.

As organisations adopt this technology, one key area of focus will be maximising efficiencies. Quest’s Site Administrator empowers SharePoint administrators to understand if that investment is being used, or needs to be expanded, by aggregating license and storage information from across all site collections and displaying it through centralised charts and reports.

As more organisations consider moving to SharePoint Online, many will deploy proof-of-concept and pilot projects that result in hybrid environments, spanning both on-premise and cloud deployments. Site Administrator makes it easy for businesses to centrally monitor and manage their environments regardless of whether SharePoint is based on-premises, online, or both.

Bill Evans, vice president and general manager, SharePoint business unit, Quest Software, said, “With this first-to-market Office 365 reporting capability, Quest Site Administrator for SharePoint will help IT managers be confident as they take the first step to the cloud. This single tool helps them understand and manage their existing on-premise environments and prepare for migrations to SharePoint Online in Office 365. Once there, users will better understand the value of their new environments, fostering maturity and growth in the market for hybrid and cloud environments.”

Kristina Kerr, group product manager for SharePoint, Microsoft Corp., said, “Quest Site Administrator for SharePoint provides customers with a quick view of the way Office 365 subscription resources are being used. SharePoint customers can use it to aggregate data from across multiple site collections to produce an easy-to-view report which helps them maximise their investment in Office 365.”
