CenturyLink increases network connectivity options for global data centre customers

CenturyLink, Inc. (NYSE: CTL) has announced it has significantly increased the number of network carriers available for interconnections across its data center portfolio. CenturyLink customers now have access to 99 different carriers and network providers across the company’s 58 data centres throughout North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. CenturyLink offers an average of seven network carrier connections at each data centre, and some facilities offer more than 20 unique providers.

The expanded connectivity options enable companies to stay better connected with their customers in today’s “data-centric” environment. CenturyLink’s growing Interconnection Ecosystem facilitates secure, reliable data centre connectivity by offering hosting and colocation customers direct, low-latency connectivity to a broad array of ecosystems beyond the walls of the data centres. Robust connectivity options provide access to ISVs, content-delivery networks, financial matching engines, carrier hotels and on-net access to more than 260 data centre facilities.

“In today’s increasingly digital world, businesses, government agencies and consumers alike face drastically increased needs for connectivity,” said David Meredith, senior vice president, global data centres, CenturyLink. “In order to meet this steep demand, organisations must take a hybrid IT approach and maximise the value of their IT assets. By accessing several different data centre carriers, CenturyLink customers are better positioned to deliver reliable and secure connections for their clients.”

“As the fast-evolving digital economy accelerates the market need for agile and secure IT infrastructure environments, organisations are leveraging colocation providers to extend their IT footprints in facilities with reliable and performance-optimised network interconnection ecosystems,” said Melanie Posey, Research Vice President at IDC. “The digital economy is geographically dispersed; therefore, IDC sees a long-term need for distributed IT environments and diverse, interconnected networks.”

The increase in carrier connections follows an announcement made earlier this year by CenturyLink about the expansion of its global data centre footprint, new facility certifications and leading-edge innovations for hosting services. Fluke networks’ new LinkRunner AT sets new speed and simplicity benchmark for Ethernet connectivity testing

Fluke Networks Ts54April 12, 2012Fluke Networks has released the LinkRunner™ AT Network Auto-Tester for frontline technicians and IT managers looking to quickly troubleshoot or verify Ethernet connectivity. With one touch of a button, the LinkRunner AT performs six essential connectivity tests and returns the results to the user in less than ten seconds, paying for itself in about a month.*

This speed and simplicity, combined with the ability to customise additional tests, lets IT managers ensure that technicians at every skill level can automatically perform a standardised set of tests and reduce errors, speed problem resolution and improve productivity by reducing errors and call backs.

Fluke Networks identified six key Ethernet connectivity tests for the AutoTest feature based on decades of leadership in the network test and measurement space. The tests, which ensure Ethernet connectivity, include continuity, link/speed/duplex, DHCP and DNS server availability and performance, key resource connectivity through TCP port open or ping, nearest switch and port identification and Power over Ethernet (PoE) performance (with TruePower™ line loading technology).

Wayne Allen, program manager, Fluke Networks said, “Increased productivity is at the top of the list for the majority of enterprise network customers as the economy continues to be uncertain and resources remain constrained. The LinkRunner AT is aimed directly at meeting that challenge for network professionals by changing the game for Ethernet connectivity testing and productivity of IT organisations.”

In developing LinkRunner AT, support for new technologies including PoE and IPv6 testing capabilities was critical. “With trends like VoIP phones and security cameras relying on PoE, and new government mandates about the use of IPv6 driving industry adoption of the standard, this tool ensures Fluke Networks is ahead of its customer’s testing needs in the market,” said Allen.

The LinkRunner AT features a full-colour ¼ VGA display and can store up to 50 test results for documentation of results and escalation of issues to other teams. In addition, it offers a unique profile function that lets organisation create a custom testing methodology with a variety of tests, and standardises those tests as one or more profiles on a single tester (or fleet of testers) for more consistent results.
