Partnership and integration of best-of-breed technologies deliver comprehensive device visibility and enforcement across heterogeneous networks.

Forescout Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:FSCT), the world leader in device visibility and control, has announced a strategic partnership with Arista Networks, an industry leader in software-driven cloud networking solutions for large datacentre and campus environments, to reduce cybersecurity risks brought on by explosive growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, increased network complexity and propagation of malware. The partnership includes the development of a unique open ecosystem that embeds security within the network fabric and delivers full visibility and enforcement of critical enterprise assets.

“Forescout and Arista are transforming network security with policy-driven segmentation and least privilege access across Arista and heterogeneous environments without proprietary vendor lock-in,” said Pedro Abreu, chief product and strategy officer, Forescout. “This is a natural and organic partnership where, together, we will provide Zero Trust security and compliance from device to network with visibility, analytics and automation.”

Through this new collaboration, Forescout integrates directly to and is certified on Arista’s switches and wireless infrastructure, including the new line of Arista Cognitive Campus PoE switches. Forescout also supports Arista’s network-wide workload orchestration and workflow automation solution CloudVision. Further, co-innovation is underway in the context of a Zero Trust architecture to identify IoT devices and ensure they are assigned to specific segments to reduce risk and prevent anomalous behaviour.

“The exponential growth and diversity of non-traditional devices on enterprise networks has drastically increased the attack surface. While these devices provide rich data, improve productivity, and create new services, cyber criminals are exploiting them as an entryway to deploy ransomware attacks and other threats that can have a severe impact on operations,” said Robyn Westervelt, research director, security & trust, IDC. “We see access enforcement and network segmentation as critical defences to manage IoT security risk.”

With the proliferation of IoT devices, the need for Zero Trust security is increasingly critical to contain outbreaks and control access. The integration of Forescout’s device visibility and control platform with Arista’s software-defined networking (SDN) architecture will address these challenges at enterprise scale and deliver complete visibility, threat detection, and dynamic segmentation.

“Forescout has proven holistic device visibility and control in today’s dynamic IoT environments in multivendor networks,” said Anshul Sadana, chief operating officer, Arista Networks. “Network speed and resilience need the active security defence that Forescout’s agentless solution provides.”

New integration continuously discovers and secures sensitive OT devices

Forescout Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:FSCT), the leader in device visibility and control, has announced its latest technology integration enhancements with longtime partner, ServiceNow. To help ensure integrity and stability of critical infrastructure, Forescout and ServiceNow provide an effective and streamlined integration that improves asset intelligence as well as threat prevention, detection and response for industrial control systems (ICS) and operational technology (OT) environments.

“Forescout and ServiceNow are introducing the future of integrated OT network defence,” said Pedro Abreu, chief product and strategy officer, Forescout. “Combining Forescout’s strength in control system discovery, classification and threat recognition with the power of ServiceNow CMDB, which provides a single system of record for IT, will help eliminate network blind spots. It also reduces needless manual task hours and uncertainty currently threatening the OT and industrial Internet of Things (IoT) landscape today.”

The integration allows security teams to make informed decisions based on device type and environment to close the security gap from unmanaged OT devices and improve performance in crucial metrics such as “mean time to resolve” (MTTR) in remediating vulnerable or affected systems. Combining complementary technologies for OT discovery, threat detection and configuration management, the Forescout-ServiceNow integrated solution centralises security and improves resiliency in manufacturing, energy, transportation and other sectors where increasingly internet-connected infrastructure is often invisible to traditional cybersecurity controls.

Customers using Forescout to continuously discover and monitor OT and ICS environments can now leverage ServiceNow’s powerful configuration management database (CMDB) platform for more efficient asset, service and security management. The integration features a data-driven ability to automate device discovery, CMDB updates and prioritised remediation or incident management workflows based on risk level, easily scaling defences with technology and business demands.

“ServiceNow CMDB is the data platform for IT,” said Jeff Hausman, vice president and general manager of ITOM, Security and CMDB, ServiceNow. “Data enrichment of the ServiceNow CMDB via Forescout continuous device discovery and automatic workflows helps customers drive transformation, deliver services and provide operational resilience. ServiceNow and Forescout enable security teams to better understand their organisation’s OT and industrial IoT devices and expedite incident response to protect critical infrastructure.”

Capitalising on the enhanced OT and industrial IoT asset intelligence capabilities, customers can reduce risk further by taking advantage of the established Forescout-ServiceNow integration capabilities that automate workflows between the Forescout platform and ServiceNow Security Operations and IT Service Management (ITSM). Customers can accelerate security and operational incident detection, management and response processes while maintaining accurate asset intelligence throughout the process. As Forescout detects a device is non-compliant or compromised, an appropriate ServiceNow incident is created and aligned with CMDB asset record. Forescout can also automatically respond to the incident with relevant network or system actions per policy and keeps CMDB asset record accurate with real-time device context. This creates an end-to-end asset intelligence and incident management system that proactively reduces risk with streamlined operations.

As a ServiceNow design partner, Forescout played a pivotal role in helping ServiceNow create new and standardised IoT and OT classes for the ServiceNow CMDB, enabling a comprehensive CMBD based on real-time device profiles across IT, IoT and OT. The companies will continue working closely together to design the future of ServiceNow’s CMDB to easily accommodate an ever-growing array of device types. Forescout’s rich contextual device information for IT, IoT and OT environments, combined with orchestrated ServiceNow workflows, provides customers with a full-scale asset intelligence foundation that reduces risk by improving security posture and streamlining operations.

“Forescout’s integration with ServiceNow’s CMDB eliminates the need for spreadsheets and manual task of populating OT assets into an organisation’s CMDB. A continuous and up-to-date CMDB across IT and OT eliminates blind spots and reduces cyber risk,” said Robyn Westervelt, Research Director, Security & Trust, IDC.

The enhanced OT and industrial IoT Forescout-ServiceNow capabilities are available now.

Forescout joins global cyber security alliance for operational technology

Forescout Technologies

New cyber security alliance will develop comprehensive cyber security guidelines for operational technology infrastructure

October 23, 2019Forescout Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSCT), the leader in device visibility and control, has announced that it has joined a new alliance to provide a technical and organisational framework for safe and secure operational technology (OT). The Operational Technology Cyber Security Alliance (OTCSA) aims to bridge dangerous gaps in security for OT and critical infrastructures and industrial control systems (ICS) to support and improve the daily lives of citizens and workers in an evolving world. Industry leaders ABB, Check Point Software, Cylance, Fortinet, Microsoft, Mocana, NCC Group, Qualys, SCADAFence, Splunk and Wärtsilä have partnered with Forescout to establish the OTCSA.

The OTCSA mission is five-fold:
· strengthen cyber-physical risk posture of OT environments and interfaces for OT/IT interconnectivity
· guide OT operators on how to protect their OT infrastructure based on a risk management process and reference architectures/designs, which are demonstrably compliant with regulations and international standards such as IEC 62443
· guide OT suppliers on secure OT system architectures, relevant interfaces and security functionalities
· support the procurement, development, installation, operation, maintenance, and implementation of a safer, more secure critical infrastructure
· accelerate the time to adoption of safer, more secure critical infrastructures.

With 60 per cent of organisations using ICS indicating that they experienced a breach in their systems in the past year, and 97 per cent acknowledging security challenges because of the convergence of IT and OT(1), the need for the OTCSA is critical. Cyber-attacks on OT and critical infrastructures are on the rise and they are impacting business risk across all industries – from disrupting manufacturing systems to halting safety services. Threats to OT can have potential impacts in scope and scale greater than in information-only environments, including negative financial impact, ecological damage and loss of life.

“Critical infrastructures and industrial control systems are essential to organisation revenue and profits and the global economy,” said Damiano Bolzoni, vice president of industrial and OT business, Forescout. “As the market leader in device visibility and control, Forescout is committed to collaborating with the industry to establish architectural, implementation and process guidelines that further strengthens the cyber security risk posture and resiliency of operational technology.”

Until now, there has been no industry group focused on improving cyber risk posture by providing tangible architectural, implementation, and process guidelines to OT operators and solution providers so that they can navigate necessary changes, upgrades and integrations to evolving industry standards and regulations. These robust security guidelines will cover the entire lifecycle – procurement, development, deployment, installation, operation, maintenance and decommission – and address aspects related to people, process, and technology.

OTCSA promotes collaboration amongst IT and OT operators and leading companies in the industry. Membership is open to any company that operates critical infrastructure or general OT systems to run its business (OT operators) as well as companies providing IT and OT solutions (solution providers).

Forescout delivers industry’s first impact-based security risk assessment tool for industrial control system and operational technology networks

SilentDefense mitigates risks against increased ICS security threats with new performance analytics and compliance standards for large enterprises

Oct. 15, 2019 – Forescout Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSCT), the leader in device visibility and control, has announced new innovation to its industrial control system (ICS) security solution SilentDefense that will help organisations aggregate and prioritise risks targeting operational technology (OT) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The new Asset Risk Framework will provide users with intuitive, impact-based scores in a central dashboard so they can determine their current security risk exposure, identify assets that have a high potential of being attacked and enable engineers to take action on the assets that need attention.

Network security monitoring tools create large amounts of information which can be very challenging for cybersecurity and operational stakeholders to review. By aggregating and prioritising operational and cyber security-based risk, real time decisions can be made quickly saving money and reducing probable issues to the networks.

“The convergence of IT and OT networks and threats posed by the adoption of industrial IoT devices and services in the cloud has left enterprises more vulnerable than ever before,” said Damiano Bolzoni, vice president of OT and industrial business, Forescout. “It is essential that organisations have access to real time data and visibility of its entire network so they can quickly understand their risk exposure and take preventative measures to mediate against the threats.”

This automated and intuitive approach to network security and operational monitoring will enable customers to deploy an advanced and holistic OT/ICS cybersecurity solution to address the increased threats. Forescout’s latest release of SilentDefense, available in October, will also offer newly expanded capabilities to provide a predictable and preventative form of risk analysis to lessen the exposure organisations face:

· Active programmable logic controller (PLC) queries: Seamless process for cyber security analysts to create alert parameters so they can quickly set up custom compliance and monitoring directives so that no PLC/controller can go unseen.

· Enhanced compliance reporting: Critical infrastructure managed by utility and energy organisations have compliance obligations when securing its networks. Forescout has now automated the compliance and reporting process for North American Electric Reliability Corporation Critical Infrastructure Protection (NERC CIP) compliance.

· FIPS compliant: All government and federal organisations have to ensure they are Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) compliant. SilentDefense now includes tools and functions to allow these organisations to easily adhere to the security requirements of OT and ICS Networks of FIPS for implementing crypto algorithms, encryption schemes, handling important data, and working with various operating systems and hardware.

Forescout reveals risk of enterprise IoT devices utilising unencrypted protocols

Forescout

  • Newly formed Forescout Research Labs aims to execute pioneering research on the threats facing network connected enterprise devices
  • Latest research demonstrates ease with which malicious actors could disrupt the normal functioning of a smart building by attacking its video surveillance systems
  • Research exploits unencrypted video streaming protocols of a surveillance camera as an example of a cyber-physical attack

Sydney, Australia – Forescout Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: FSCT), the leader in device visibility and control, has announced new research, Rise of the Machines: Transforming Cybersecurity Strategy for the Age of IoT,” which investigates how surveillance cameras, smart lights, and other Internet of Things (IoT) devices within smart buildings could be attacked by cyber criminals and how to mitigate those attacks.

Elisa Costante, Sr. Director of Forescout Research Labs, said, “Today’s connected world is made up of billions of devices that use a myriad of operating systems and network protocols to exchange data across industries and boundaries. We created Forescout Research Labs to explore the security implications of this hyper-connected world and research the associated threats and risks coming from these devices.”

To demonstrate the cyber risks of a smart building, Forescout Research Labs set up a real-world smart building environment containing video surveillance, smart lighting, and other IoT devices, and analysed how an attacker could obtain initial access to this network and some of the attacks they could implement for each subsystem.

The research highlights the following findings:

  • Many IoT devices, including surveillance cameras, are set up by default to communicate over unencrypted protocols, allowing for traffic sniffing and tampering of sensitive information.
  • Forescout Research Labs demonstrated how sensitive information could be tampered with using surveillance cameras commonly used by enterprises. Researchers successfully replaced a network video recorder’s footage with previously recorded fake content.
  • Compromising the video surveillance system is an example of a cyber-physical attack.
  • A search on Shodan pulled up nearly 4.7 million devices that could be potentially impacted by using these unencrypted protocols.

“We are at the forefront of the IT/OT convergence that brings massive benefits to enterprises, but unfortunately it also comes with an increased level of cyber risk,” said Costante. “You can expect to hear more from our team as we set out on a mission to educate the market on how to protect businesses and infrastructures from the bad actors that leverage device, network, and protocol vulnerabilities to damage or disrupt their functions.”

Forescout Research Labs will leverage unique insights and data gathered from the Forescout Device Cloud, which is one of the world’s largest crowdsourced device repositories and now contains more than 10 million devices from nearly 1,200 customers who share anonymised device insights.
