Wavelink Communications announces Meru Networks awarded patent that addresses problem of Wi-Fi network congestion meltdowns

Melbourne, February 15, 2011 – Wavelink Communications, a value added distributor of business IP, wireless and communication solutions, has announced that Meru Networks, the leader in virtualised 802.11n enterprise wireless networking, has been awarded a patent for its ground breaking virtualised wireless LAN (WLAN) architecture.

Patent no. 7,826,426 covers Meru’s Virtual Port technology, designed to address the problem of a Microcell Wi-Fi meltdown and wireless network congestion.  Meru’s newly patented unique technology provides wired switch-like bandwidth optimisation and security for enterprises that increasingly need to manage environments with growing density of iPads, iPhones and similar next-generation smartphone mobile devices, such as Android-based wireless devices.

Ilan Rubin, managing director, Wavelink Communications, said, “The explosion of mobile devices used by mobile workers in all types of businesses will drive infrastructure density in many places over the next few years increasing the demand, and sophistication required, for wireless networks.

“Meru’s virtualisation technology provides the solution to addressing density issues and avoiding the bottlenecks and meltdowns that can be difficult to avoid when wireless networks are in high demand.”

To manage this rapid increase in density and wireless network congestion, Meru’s Virtual Port uniquely provides switch-like port isolation to devices over the air. Network managers gain fine-grain access control and improved security, while the infrastructure optimises the allocation of the wireless bandwidth to address the problems of Microcell Wi-Fi meltdowns caused by Wi-Fi spectrum congestion.

Meru’s Virtual Port architecture is designed to provide a dedicated virtual network connection for each mobile device, giving users the performance, reliability and security expected from wired networks.  The network architecture also delivers the mobility benefits of wireless and the flexibility of virtualisation for mobile applications, all while delivering quality-of-service (QoS) and predictable service levels.

Meru’s virtualised WLAN solutions are purpose-built to scale and easily handle the highest user density environments created by the use of Wi-Fi enabled devices such as iPads, iPhones, smartphones and laptops accessing voice, video and data content and applications.

Rubin said, “A Microcell Wi-Fi meltdown is not an isolated incident and businesses are looking to understand how they can avoid them.  Meru’s virtualised WLAN architecture was designed from the beginning to avoid these issues.”

Users of Meru’s Virtual Port are able to avoid wireless failures in high-density environments, because client devices are provided a unique virtual wireless network with dedicated bandwidth and network control.  On the other hand, legacy microcell users may continue to experience increasing incidents of Wi-Fi meltdowns, because every device must share bandwidth, and as more and more devices are introduced, the more unstable and unreliable the network becomes.

Key facts
* Optimisation and management of the Wi-Fi network is crucial to successfully managing spectrum congestion.  Unlike legacy microcell WLAN designs, Meru’s Virtual Port technology can operate on a single channel for use enterprise-wide, and is designed to maximise network performance while accelerating and simplifying deployments.  With its zero-handoff technology, mobile devices need not switch channels when roaming, so users and applications can experience uninterrupted connections.  Meru’s single channel set-up is designed to mitigate interference so users can cover larger areas with fewer access points and support much higher density of mobile devices.

* With Meru’s architecture, enterprises can layer additional channels simultaneously, letting them harness the spectrum wasted by multiple-channel microcell networks to support even greater density, reliability and continuity of their applications.

* Microcell Wi-Fi meltdowns are a growing occurrence everyday across enterprises.  Meru’s core technology is designed to support the proliferation of wireless devices and applications and more critically, avoid such Wi-Fi meltdowns.  Meru’s ability help enterprises avoid a Wi-Fi meltdown has been demonstrated with its WLAN 500 demo, with more than 500 wireless devices in an area of less than  47 square metres – streaming voice, video and data concurrently and deliver full quality of service whether stationary or mobile.

Meru delivers the most secure FIPS 140-2 compliant 802.11n solution in the marketplace

Only WLAN built to the US National Institute of Standards and Technology’s FIPS 140-2 Level 3 specification

September 8, 2010 – Meru Networks, Inc., (NASDAQ:MERU), the leader in 802.11n virtualised wireless LAN solutions for enterprise networking, announced that its SG1000 Wireless Security Gateway currently supports 802.11n deployments, making Meru the only wireless LAN (WLAN) solution provider delivering 802.11n solutions built to the US National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 Level 3 security specifications. Federal agencies, financial firms and commercial entities alike can experience the performance, predictability and scalability of Meru’s 802.11n virtualised wireless LAN (WLAN) solutions with the highest security assurance available in the marketplace today.

“The growth of wireless technology has created new security challenges for customers trying to provide a flexible but secure, infrastructure. Our FIPS 140-2 Level 3 validation for 802.11n deployments is just one example of how Meru is leading and shaping the WLAN industry,” said Ram Appalaraju, senior vice president, marketing, Meru Networks. According to the NIST Computer Security Division, Meru delivers the highest level of US Government FIPS security validation among WLAN vendors. Furthermore, our fully-integrated Service Assurance Platform offers comprehensive security functionality including rogue detection and mitigation in both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, a signature-based Wireless Intrusion Detection and Prevention (WIPS) to detect and counter wireless security issues.

Meru WLAN FIPS 140-2 Level 3 is the first to provide tamper-proof hardened epoxy shell devices that cannot function if broken and have the ability to be deployed without physical monitoring.  Meru localises the FIPS security services to a platform decoupled from, yet coexisting with, the overall WLAN, allowing the WLAN to be upgraded independent of the FIPS offering.  As the only WLAN vendor to offer this level of secure architecture, Meru follows the principle of containing and separating critical security functions from non-security-related operations.  Customers are able to use the latest available WLAN software without waiting for a year-long FIPS verification process that is required for each version and build of the cryptography firmware.

The SG1000 Wireless Security Gateway meets the Department of Defense (DoD) Directive 8100.2 with use of Commercial Wireless Devices, Services, and Technologies in the DoD Global Information Grid (GIG). SG1000 supports over 3,000 users in one appliance, offers strong 802.11i AES encryption and uses certificate-based EAP-TLS to authenticate all users.

To access Meru’s Security Gateway SG1000 Cryptographic Module Security Policy, please visit the NIST website. To view a complete list of companies with FIPS 140-2 Level 3 validation, go to NIST’s Computer Security Resource Center.

Product Availability

The SG1000 FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Gateway is available with the AP300 Series access point and any controller.

Meru’s wireless LAN solutions are distributed in Australia by Wavelink Communications.

Wavelink Chosen as Distributor for AirTight Networks Wireless Intrusion Prevention Solutions

Global leader in wireless security solutions further complements Wavelink’s wireless portfolio

Melbourne, August 25, 2010 – Wavelink Communications, a value-added distributor of business IP, wireless and communication solutions has been chosen as the Australian distributor for AirTight® Networks’ SpectraGuard® family of wireless intrusion prevention (WIPS) products and services. AirTight is recognised as a global leader in supplying wireless network security solutions, which ensure that both wired networks and wireless LAN (WLAN) security and performance are not compromised by wireless threats or interference such as denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, WLAN traffic is kept private and secure, users are prevented from installing unauthorized WLANs, and unsupported/ unauthorised WLAN technologies are barred from operation.

Ilan Rubin, Wavelink managing director said, “It is now standard industry practice that any enterprise wireless network must provide secure wireless connectivity. While the built-in security capabilities of enterprise-class WLAN vendors are acceptable for many applications, a number of factors drive the need for wireless-specific security monitoring capabilities. These include mis-configuration and administration of WLAN security settings, the proliferation of unmanaged wireless devices in the workplace, such as iPhones and smartphones, and increased security demands from government and defence users as well as from the retail industry for the security of wireless payment processing systems and to meet the PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) Wireless Guideline.”

“Although some wireless security capabilities can be implemented using the integrated monitoring functions provided by the WLAN infrastructure vendor, AirTight operates as a separate overlay WIPS to any WLAN, which delivers stronger security capabilities through full-time monitoring. We expect that as wireless technology becomes more pervasive, the overlay approach will provide the most flexible approach for rapidly incorporating monitoring and intrusion prevention. The addition of AirTight further complements our growing portfolio of enterprise wireless solutions,” continued Rubin.

AirTight has focused solely building products for wireless intrusion prevention from the ground up,” said Steve Choi, AirTight’s managing director for Asia Pacific Sales. “SpectraGuard is easy to set up and operate, and AirTight’s methodology for classifying events avoids false alarms when identifying rogues. We recognise the value that Wavelink provides via their market knowledge, established channels and technical expertise and are delighted to welcome them as our distributor.”

Wavelink to distribute amigopod visitor management portfolio

Following increased national and international success in securing guest access and public hotspot networks, amigopod expands coverage in Australia with Wavelink appointment

Melbourne, August 12, 2010 – Wavelink Communications, a value-added distributor of business IP, wireless and communication solutions has signed an agreement to distribute amigopod’s Unified Visitor Management solutions. An Australian company, amigopod has rapidly become a global leader in flexible and interactive solutions that simplify the provision and secure the management of visitor access, and has appointed Wavelink to accelerate its growth in Australia.

Wavelink managing director, Ilan Rubin said, “With the explosion in demand for network access by mobile employees, business travellers and the general public, providers of both corporate and public networks are increasingly looking for uncomplicated ways to manage these demands. As wireless LANs and wireless public hotspots are rapidly becoming the preferred means to connect to networks, amigopod’s solutions enable guest access through a simple and effective process and are extremely complementary to Wavelink’s existing wireless offerings.”

The amigopod family of Visitor Management Appliances integrate into existing network equipment and broadband Internet connections to enable a simple and centralised system to manage visitors on both corporate and public networks.

Carlos Gomez Gallego, director of product management, amigopod said, “Organisations need to offer guest access, but with no standard policy in place, it is often complex and time-consuming for IT. In the public access environment, traditional hotspot providers are more service orientated and want to leverage technology that improves the customer experience and loyalty.”

“Our unique Visitor Management appliances ease the complex provision of corporate guest access and provide the gateway to the next generation hotspot. amigopod has had considerable success around the world, not least in Australia, with many high profile customers such as McDonalds, Billabong, Gold Coast Airport. Our valued partnership with Wavelink will help develop and drive new business in Australia.”

Corporate guest access
Visitors to organisations, whether clients, auditors, technicians or maintenance, all expect to connect whenever they visit business premises. Providing Internet access to manage emails, access corporate information resources or read social networking feeds is now a necessity and expectation for guests in today’s workplace, and increasingly this access is being provided via wireless LAN.

As wireless is no longer bound by the walls and business hours of the organisation, controls must be put in place to prevent unauthorised access and also ensure visitors can only access the Internet and not internal IT resources. Similarly, there should be provisions in place to make sure visitors can’t take advantage of the guest network to download large files or impact the Internet performance of corporate users who are sharing the same connection.

amigopod lets reception staff create, edit and manage all aspects of visitor accounts on the guests’ arrival by completing a few details on a web-based form, instead of relying on IT staff in the daily provisioning and management of guest access. An account is created for the guest, and their credentials can be either printed or sent via SMS to their mobile. Guest access can be limited or extended to any time duration. Once the time has expired, the account is removed, the audit trail recorded and further access denied without a new account being created.

Public access
In the public access space, wireless hotspot providers such as retail centres, hotels, sporting venues, airports and hospitals are increasingly looking for the next generation hotspot model to remain competitive. Using some or all free wireless as the market driver, amigopod offers a flexible and interactive marketing platform, letting providers offer value-added and premium services directly to customers and build end user loyalty. With amigopod, customers can manage wireless hotspot access by offering self-registration, merchant billing, advertising services and rich location/brand specific reporting.
