Media training

Effective spokespeople are critical when working with the media.

Any interaction with a journalist is an opportunity to reach a highly engaged target audience, so it’s important to make every interview and engagement count.

A positive interaction can build personal reputations, boost brand recognition, and support sales and marketing activities. A negative interaction can, obviously, do the opposite.

Unlike paid marketing, where you control the message, going on the public record in a media outlet is usually irrevocable once a story has been published.

Media training tailored to your role and risks

Recognition’s media training program helps spokespeople understand how journalists gather information, filter for audience interest, and produce content. It also includes role-specific and media-specific interview practice with real-time feedback, teaching participants how to engage with journalists positively, communicate their key messages clearly, avoid common mistakes, and consider the long-term impact of their performance on media outcomes.

Our training sessions are developed around each participant’s roles and responsibilities and feature real-world interview scenarios they are likely to experience.

Where required, the program can also include a focus on crisis and issues management to help you prepare for plausible high-pressure situations and protect your brand reputation.

Recognition’s media training program is delivered via video conferencing or face-to-face. It is designed for up to four participants from a single company at a time.

Attendees will learn how to:

  • prepare for media interviews and feel confident when speaking with journalists
  • interpret a journalist’s agenda, develop trust, and build rapport
  • communicate messages powerfully and succinctly
  • negotiate difficult questions using simple but effective techniques
  • maximise news value and structure messages for better coverage.
